Character Name: Kija
Canon: Akatsuki no Yona
Canon Point: chapter 129
About: In briefest terms, Kija is a sweet guy who's a little gullible and incredibly overzealous. He's sheltered and pampered, but seems to have sidestepped the "pompous little lord" persona that a lot of people assume he'll have when they see/hear about his upbringing. This is pretty much the only thing about Kija that comes as a surprise, though, as he's so up front about himself, his views, his priorities, and so on that it's hard not to get a perfectly accurate picture of him from the man himself. He's very honest like that.
The focal point of Kija's life is his devotion to being Hakuryuu/the White Dragon, one of the four dragon warriors who are destined to serve the returning King Hiryuu. The village of Hakuryuu is the only of the four dragon villages that actually embraces and loves its dragon/destiny, so Kija has been raised as an exalted and almost worshiped member of his community. It's partially for this reason that he's so wholly devoted, but he's also just very inclined toward embracing all of a cause like this. Being the White Dragon gives him a sense of pride and purpose, which is a bit of a double-edged sword— sometimes he doesn't feel like being the White Dragon is enough, and it devastates him to not feel useful to his master. All he wants, ultimately, is to be of use. All it takes is a kind word about how no one could take his place to relieve his insecurities, thankfully. As long as he knows he's valuable and belongs in the group, he's good.
Another thing about Kija's need to support is his absolute determination to do this thing. Because of the White Dragon village's zealous devotion to serving the King, previous generations of White Dragons have all been just as devoted as Kija has. For this reason, when they die, their spirits linger and attach to the next dragon generation to hound them jealously for not being able to support their King in their lifetime. Kija is covered in these spirits as a result, but he's so completely ready to shoulder all of their burdens that it doesn't impact them at all. He doesn't even know they're there, he simply truly believes that part of his duty to the King is to shoulder the disappointment of all those before him who couldn't do what he's doing. He'll do this for anyone, too, as he once offers to give up his body to a malicious spirit and bear its burdens so that one of his companions doesn't suffer. He's generally received as "pure" and "without a touch of evil," as he's dedicated to bearing the troubles of others entirely selflessly.
This does not come without repercussions - Kija is selfless to the point of recklessness, with a skewed sense of self-preservation. In short: if he dies protecting his master, then it was worth it, and it doesn't matter what happens to him. He'll push himself in a fight well past reasonable degrees of safety, and he's the first person to jump up shouting that he's already healed even when it's clear he's wounded all over and likely to pass out at any minute. He's overzealous about everything, from battles to manners to proving his strength in a casual game between friends. There is no moment Kija isn't running at 200% enthusiasm, and he is definitely a creature of extremes.
As a pampered and sheltered person who hadn't left his village... ever, Kija is not very worldly to the point that he becomes gullible. His perspective on things is colored by his sheltered upbringing in that he makes an assumption about how something in the world works and just goes with it (for example, the first time he encounters a lot of bugs, he wonders aloud who "allowed these creatures to settle here"). He's easily convinced to do most things under the logic that the person telling him totally knows this is the right way to do that thing! Such as accepting a strong drink before a fight, despite knowing that he's crappy at holding his liquor and subsequently being too unconscious to participate. It takes him a while to accept that sleeping outside and eating grass are things he has to do, and while he adjusts as well as he can, he still prefers a clean bed and proper food.
Another point about his overzealous behavior is the way he sees people more or less in black and white. His friends and allies are friends for life, once he's decided someone is a valuable ally and someone he sees as a good enough person to support, it's impossible to shake him. You'd have to stab Yona in front of him to change his mind... Conversely, the moment someone is cruel to a civilian or dismissive of anyone from a seat of power, Kija loses all respect for them. He'll tear a fort down with his bare hands before he permits cruelty to the people inside to continue, or express very serious desires to burn a country to the ground if their leaders hurt Yona. Again, he's extreme, and jumping straight to seriously violent consequences is not out of the ordinary for him at all. When Yona or others he's devoted to are seriously threatened, he loses any modicum of well-mannered noble warrior he ordinarily has and goes directly to "crush their skull with my dragon hand." While he's usually stopped before he can murder someone with a squeeze, it's worth noting that he's never expressed regret about wanting to. Kija goes hard both to support allies and to destroy enemies.
This becomes messy when his allies have an enemy that he can't find anything wrong with other than his friends don't like them, such as with King Soo-Won, because he can't justify harming someone who doesn't seem to be evil in any way besides circumstance. If his friends hate someone, he's usually right there with them, but on rare occasions when the only evidence he has is through word of mouth, it confuses him and he'd really just rather not deal with it. Keep those morally ambiguous people away, they shake up his worldview and he can't deal with it...
Going back to Kija's pride in who/what he is, his dragon arm is sacred to him. He has no shame whatsoever in having it or having other people see it - it's a symbol of what he is and the mission he has to do! It doesn't matter that people see it and call him a monster - that's encouragement. It would be hard to hide, as it's always just a little too big to look like a normal arm even if it wasn't scaly, but he's too proud of it to hide it. Somewhat similar are the scars on his back caused by his father, the previous White Dragon, attacking him out of jealousy when he was an infant. This goes back to the village's zealous devotion to the whole dragon-and-king thing, and while most people assume it was a traumatic experience, it's actually the opposite. He considers his scars a vital reminder that he needs to shoulder the disappointments of the previous generations, and so he's never ashamed of his scars, nor does he harbor resentment towards his father.
It takes Kija a long while to realize that not everyone is as extremely devoted as he is. He, who leaves his village inside of six hours after meeting Yona, is most definitely the odd one out among the dragons who actually need to think first before going. This is especially a point of contention with Jae-Ha, who thinks Kija is a mindless puppet following what his bloodline demands of him without any thought of his own. He is, but voluntarily - he just still occasionally forgets that not everyone's views are the same as his own and he'll inadvertently try to force his views/values on others. He doesn't do it out of malice, but over-enthusiasm— he needs to be reminded that this is his least appealing quality and then he'll dial it back. He's just excited and can't always understand why not everyone else is.
Outside of his extremes about destiny(!!), Kija is a sweet person. He's good-natured and kind, and wants his beloved people to be happy. He's fussy about good manners and how to behave properly, especially around people he respects, and he worries about accidentally being rude. He's more casual with friends he views as equals and he's quick to whip out the "call me big brother"-type comments, because once he's in a friendship he is in forever, and he genuinely wants all of his precious people to rely on him whenever. Even when his banter with someone has a competitive edge, like with Hak, when it comes down to someone being in trouble, Kija is the first person to offer himself as support or for venting.
He's a lot to handle all the time, but he's a sweetheart who just wants to be useful.
Inventory: Just his clothes and an extra traveling cloak!
Feature Type: Lizard features!! Since he is already 10% (dragon) furry in canon, I'd like him to keep his lizardy features (i.e. the big dragon hand) with maybe some extra lizard scales popping up and not gain features from another animal. I'm willing to accept this as something to be vaguely side-eyed by natives...
What are your plans with this character? I don't have concrete plans but I do know he'll be gung ho about ALLIANCE TEAMWORK!! and get real hype about that.
